Name of project: Street Smart
Related courses: Nitec in Service Skills (Office)
                                 Nitec in Service Skills (Retail)
                                 Nitec in Beauty Therapy

Brief description
This facility recreates a “lifestyle” retail shop environment, modeled after actual commercial outlets. The retail area serves as a specialty shop that carries merchandise ranging from streetwear to accessories, while the “lifestyle” manicure corner has a display counter, equipped with basic hand care products. The room is furnished with standard equipment found in commercial outlets, such as cashiering machines, mannequins and display racks. Participants are taught practical skills in identifying, designing, packaging and marketing products to customers. Participants will experience the challenges involved in a Retail-cum-Manicure operation. Apart from imparting hands-on experience in retail display, basic hand-care skills, promotions and customer service, the programme also aims to inculcate a spirit of entrepreneurship in them.

Learning objectives
Participants will be divided into two teams. One team will set up a “lifestyle” retail store and the other will set up a manicure corner. The former will handle merchandise display at the retail store while the latter will learn hand care and hand massage techniques at the manicure corner. Participants will also get to exhibit their creativity in coming up with marketing materials for the business. Teams will also conduct role plays to allow them to practise customer service skills. The programme involves practical skills where participants can apply their knowledge in running a real business.

School of Engineering

Name of project: Smart Home Automation and Control
Related courses: Nitec in Electrical Technology
                                 Nitec in Electronics
 Higher Nitec in Electrical Engineering

Brief description
Students will design a smart living room with a touch panel. Working in pairs, they will apply the knowledge learnt in wiring a smart relay. Then they will program the touch screen in the smart home environment to control lighting, blinds and audio system.

Learning objectives
Students will be exposed to the different aspects of Electrical and Electronics systems. They will learn about Automation and Control using the smart relay. The project will also help to stimulate early creativity in programming and promote understanding of logic control.

School of Info-Comm Technology

Name of project: IRC on the Go
Related courses: Nitec in Info-Communications Technology
 Nitec in Multimedia Technology
 Higher Nitec in Information Technology

Brief description
Students will experience developing Internet Relay Chat (‘IRC’) on both a personal computer (‘PC’) as well as a mobile device (‘PDA’). Using the PC as the client, the students will be taught how to program IRC functions and scripts to support online chat.

The completed program will be downloaded into the PDA. Students will then be able to conduct online chat through a wireless network, thus enabling an appreciation of mobile technology. This set of skills, once learnt, will allow the students to progress towards developing mobile applications on the mobile phone.

Learning objectives
Students will appreciate the technology that enables mobile applications to connect to application servers such as Chat Rooms and On-line gaming.
