The technical competency and expertise of ITE College East staff are often tapped by local and overseas partners to engage in various technology development projects. To date, staff have engaged in several overseas and local projects commissioned by government organisations and industry practitioners.
Setting Up the Regional Vocational Training Centre in Jordan
In FY 2006, ITE was appointed as the project consultant by the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs to set up a Regional Vocational Training Centre (RTVC) in Jordan under the auspices of AMED (Asia-Middle East Dialogue). The centre will focus on vocational training and develop training standards for individuals entering the labour market across the region. It will be a key component in Jordan’s wider efforts to develop a well-trained workforce attuned to the region’s industry needs and to complement Jordan’s economic liberisation initiatives.
The Building Services Technology Department (BST) from ITE College East was engaged to work on this project in setting up of the RVTC and developing the curriculum and teaching materials. The BST staff also developed a 120-hour Air-conditioning Systems Maintenance & Diagnostic programme to upgrade the skills of Jordanian craftsmen and skilled workers working in the air-conditioning, refrigeration and eating industry.
Fish & Chip - RFID Tracking of Fishes (Underwater World Singapore)
ITE College East, in collaboration with the Underwater World Singapore, developed the display software for a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) fish tracking system that allowed visitors to recognise each fish with personalised biodata – possibly the world’s first such implementation in an oceanarium. Through the use of an RFID microchip embedded in each fish, visitors are able to access information about the fish via a touch screen computer fitted next to the tank.
The system was officially launched by Underwater World Singapore on 22 May 2007.
Industry Projects with Small & Medium Enterprises
ITE College East has also ventured into industry project work with Small & Medium Enterprises. The following industry projects were commissioned by the industry and spearheaded by teams from the respective schools in the College:
Programming EIB Devices
The School of Engineering ITE-ABB Automation Technology Solutions Centre carried out industry project work in programming EIB devices and Winswitch (visualization software) for Mukaya Concepts Pte Ltd. They also programmed EIB devices at Sentosa for Sunlight Electrical Pte Ltd.
